WP4
Innovative applications not achievable by other thermal-energy based technologies

Objective

WP4: Innovative applications that cannot be achieved by other thermal-energy based AM/repair technologies: this WP leverages the unique characteristics of CS (i.e., low working temperature, the absence of dimensional limitations, no heat affected zone, high deposition rate and wide list of sprayable materials) to establish innovative applications by obtaining joined/restored/bulk products that either address the shortcomings of the current practices by large (DC9) or cannot be obtained using currently available manufacturing/repair routes (DCs 1, 10), by: (DC09-POLIMI) – CS welding: developing detailed programming, simulation and numerical approaches to gain fine control on geometry and structural functions of joined structural components; (DC10-POLIMI) – structural repair of corroded components in oil & gas industry; (DC1-CNRS) – fabrication of structural materials for high field magnets implying high thermal fluxes and high mechanical constraints by systematically analyzing the effect of deposition parameters on the anisotropy of fatigue behavior, plasticity, and electrical properties of thick bulk deposits.

Scope

  1. CS welding with fine geometrical and functional control
  2. Structural repair of corroded components in oil & gas
  3. High structural high ductility scalable magnets
